Why a Women’s Boutique? The Story Behind The Art of Becoming

Jenny Frickie with her family

If you found me through my music, you might be wondering how a women’s boutique became part of the picture.

I understand the question. Sometimes I look at this journey and marvel at how one step led to another. But the thread running through all of it is becoming: finding my voice, reclaiming joy, and learning to express the woman God created me to be.

Let me start at the beginning.

It began with the prayers of my heart

During a dark valley season, I began sharing the prayers of my heart. It was an act of obedience to what I believed God was asking me to do, even though I had no idea where it would lead.

At first, I shared words with Scripture references. Those words became reels and shorts with graphics. Eventually, the graphics became animated.

Then, in July 2025, I discovered Suno AI, and everything changed for me.

I studied children’s literature and poetry at Virginia Tech, and writing has always been a place where I find peace and understanding. Putting my thoughts and feelings into words helps me make sense of what is happening inside me. By then, I had more than ten years of poetry tucked away in the Notes app on my iPhone.

There were melodies waiting there, too.

In 2015, after experiencing extraordinary healing through a ministry called Restoring the Foundations, I began receiving lyrics and melodies. I recorded them on my iPhone, unsure what to do with them.

I called them my little gifts from God.

Ten years later, discovering Suno gave me a way to develop those recordings into songs. I immediately began uploading them and learning how to bring the music to life.

I haven’t stopped writing, singing, and producing since.

Some songs begin with what I call “downloads from Heaven”: usually lyrics, sometimes melodies, and occasionally both...and usually they occur during a church service. They flow out of me in ways that leave me amazed and grateful.

I joke that you can tell which ones are the “Jenny songs” because I labor over them, rewriting them again and again. With the heavenly downloads, I feel like a conduit, trying to faithfully put into words what God has placed on my heart.

So, what was I talking about?

Right. A women’s boutique.

The merch store that never quite fit

As I learned about writing, publishing, and releasing music, I kept encountering the same advice: streaming income can be difficult to build, and merchandise is one way artists support their work.

For months, I wrestled with that idea. I played with designs and tried to imagine what my “artist merch” should look like.

Nothing felt quite right.

I wanted to support the music, but putting my name and face on things felt awkward. I am no Taylor Swift. I’m just Jenny: a homeschooling mom of three awesome little people and a devoted military wife.

Then something happened that helped me see the store differently.

When a full closet suddenly felt empty

In June 2026, I attended a weeklong trauma intensive. I came home feeling freer and more willing to be seen, although it took a few weeks to find my footing.

As I adjusted, I noticed something unexpected.

My closet was full of options, but it felt empty.

Pieces I had loved no longer felt like me. I would look through my clothes and struggle to find something I wanted to wear.

I was becoming more comfortable in my own skin, yet increasingly uncomfortable in my clothes.

So I did what plenty of women would do: I started shopping online.

I looked for things that made me pause. Things that caught my breath or made me genuinely excited about wearing them. My husband encouraged me to explore what it looked like to express myself authentically through my clothes.

I kept being drawn to feminine details, soft textures, beautiful vibrant jewel toned colors, and items that had a little bit of whimsy.

And as I paid attention to those things, I began noticing a change.

I was excited to get dressed.

I wanted to leave the house.

I enjoyed putting an outfit together and stepping into the day feeling like myself. After spending so much time wanting to hide away, that mattered.

Finding joy in getting dressed

I know clothing can seem like a small thing to talk about in a story about healing. But small, everyday choices became meaningful to me.

Choosing something because I loved it was practice in paying attention to my own voice. Wearing a detail that felt playful or beautiful gave me another way to express something I had kept tucked away.

Later, I came across the idea of “enclothed cognition,” which explores connections between clothing, its meaning, and how we think and feel. It gave me language for something I had been noticing in my own life.

Getting dressed had become one small part of my healing journey. An outfit could help me feel ready to participate in the day, be seen, and enjoy being myself.

I was becoming Jenny again. And I was discovering parts of her I hadn’t fully met before.

A compliment opened the door

Around that time, I attended our homeschool summer training. A sweet friend came up to me, gushing about how much she loved my outfit.

I had been receiving more compliments on my clothes, and that conversation sparked a thought:

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a boutique I could point someone toward when she loved something I was wearing?

Suddenly, the store began to make sense to me.

I could share pieces I enjoyed wearing. I could create designs connected to the music and curate clothing that reflected the same joy, beauty, and meaning.

With “Falling for You” coming out that fall, I began imagining a capsule wardrobe inspired by the music collection.

Why florals and plaid?

As I leaned into florals, I received feedback that not every woman loves them.

Fair enough. I’m not in the mood for florals every day, either.

I wanted something to accompany the whimsy: a little structure, a little seriousness. Plaid felt like the right partner.

The combination also reminded me of my two daughters. They each seem to embody different, sometimes opposing characteristics, and I recognize both sides in myself.

I can be serious and playful. Thoughtful and whimsical. Drawn to tradition and excited by something unexpected.

Florals and plaid gave me a way to express those parts of myself together. That is how both became part of the Falling for You collection.

Choosing the pieces

From there, I began searching for quality pieces with soft textures and special details, looking for natural fabrics where possible.

I wanted clothing I would be excited to reach for in my own closet. Pieces that could work together while still having something lovely about them individually.

Shopping for the boutique was fun. Having samples arrive and getting to wear them was even more fun.

There is something special about discovering that the detail you loved in a photograph is just as lovely in person, then imagining all the ways you might wear it.

That feeling is part of what I want to share.

The Art of Becoming

Looking back, I can see how much of this journey has involved intentionally reclaiming joy.

Sharing my prayers helped me find my voice. Making music gave years of words and melodies somewhere to go. Exploring my style helped me enjoy getting dressed and feel more comfortable being seen.

Each step has been part of choosing to become the joyful, brave, loving woman I have always wanted to be.

That is why the store is called The Art of Becoming.

I am still healing, learning, and discovering what it means to live as the woman God created me to be. The prayers, the music, the designs, and the pieces I choose all flow from that unfolding journey.

My hope is that, somewhere in what I share, you find a little encouragement to pay attention to what brings you joy, too. Maybe it is a song that gives words to your heart. Maybe it is a beautiful detail that makes you smile when you get dressed.

There is beauty in every season, including the ones when we are still figuring out who we are becoming.

This is my journey, and this is the art that pours out of me.
